Press Clippings, Tear Sheets, and Reviews

The works on view seem to reflect the musings of a fantastic and tortuous imagination... or so we thought until her subjects showed up en masse at her opening, revealing once and for all that
Butter is actually a realist.

CLIPPINGS and TEARS MOSTLY IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER

JANUARY 2013 // FEMMELDEHYDE

EXCERPT

….You don’t need the super abilities
of any kind of physics, or a degree to build one of these. But
if you can assemble Ikea furniture, and kind of get it together
without the plans… that’s about what I’m offering here. Except
for the part where you need a hexahydronomical space radio.
But if you had that, it would work. And these things were very
big back in the 1920’s. If you got a hold of that, and an alarm
clock, a pink rock, a jar with a jar inside of it, a roll of string,
a watch, an apple, and some pins, and about a handful of wire,
we could punch a hole in space-time…..

SEPTEMBER 2012 // PRETTYQUEER

EXCERPT

Toronto-based artist Lillian Butter, who also paints under several alter egos, showed the first two installments of a giant triptych depicting her own misadventures while stranded in Amsterdam.  The triptych, called “BloedGrache: Er is Niks aan te Doen /// Blood Canal : There is Nothing you can Do” depicts the fight that ensued when Lamb showed up on (and was ejected from) BloedStraat, a street within the red light district of Amsterdam where transsexual prostitutes tap on shop front windows from the inside at prospective clients walking by.  The paintings sequentially illustrate this stunning scene in Lamb’s filthy and delicious style which captures so much detail–each window within what might be called the “background” of the larger painting shows a glimpse into the character of a different person working on BloedStraat and this creates a sense of place that left me feeling like I could smell and even taste the air of this strange and horrifying scene that only Lamb could have both survived to tell and successfully transported her audience to her experiences on BloedStraat.  Lamb’s talent and previous work should make the grotesque and stunning painful beauty of these paintings no surprise but I still found myself stunned in the presence of her paintings.

SUMMER 2011 // MAD PRIDE

SUMMER 2011 // ART SLANT

Butter documents the private lives of New Orleans
gutterpunks and squatters in her mixed media drawings and paintings. At
once filled with sordid realities and psychedelic reverie, Butter’s work
captures the essence of her subjects’ lives on the street and in their
temporary shelters. The poignancy of her work comes from the permanence
of her artistic statement, with it’s bold lines and color, which
contrast with the transitory and combustible nature of her subjects’
lives.

– I think this is a Quote from Maria Batan.

Lillian Butter’s paintings and drawings at Barrister’s are all about the lifestyle of a certain subculture of pierced and tattooed wanderers who locally cluster in the St. Roch neighborhood. As expressionistic as anything by George Grosz, the works on view seem to reflect the musings of a fantastic and tortuous imagination—or so we thought until her subjects showed up en masse at her opening, revealing once and for all that Butter is actually a realist. Either way, this Canadian punkster who divides her time between Toronto and Nola is a talented artist as well as the recording angel of a particular milieu. What Toulouse-Lautrec was to the Paris demimonde of the past, Butter is to the St. Roch subculture of the present.

EXCERPT
I am an art school drop out, but i only realized how much i learned from art school recently. Shortly after I decided to get serious about being a professhonal artsy I discovered that everybuddy didn't
know much about 2 and 3 point perspective or color schemes or proportion in gesture drawings. Every single one of those things is actually very relevant in everyday life. they come up all the time.

oh Imi, Luv you n shit
